Professor André Gois shows how to break a collar grip by gripping the opponent’s collar. The opponent moves in and grips André’s collar. André reacts by gripping the same side collar, but going under the arm. Whoever has this grip under the arm, has better control. André now grips his own collar near the opponent’s grip. He breaks the opponent’s grip by first pulling the lapel away from the hand, then uses his shoulder to push on the hand and lastly he uses the arm to lift the opponent’s arm. These three motions allow André to break the opponent’s lapel grip.
