Professor Lucas Lepri demonstrates a variation of the De La Riva guard that transitions to a sweep or a direct pass. When the opponent has a lapel grip on their belt, Lucas can temporarily lock up their leg to create an opening and get the lapel out. He then extends his body and pushes their leg with the lapel grip to create tension and off-balance them. This allows Lucas to come up easily. If a sweep is not immediately available, and Lucas gets stuck after the lift, he can free his top hook and come up to a standing position. This allows for a variety of follow-up guard passes, such as a knee cut or smash pass, by capitalizing on the position.
