Professor André Gois teaches how to get an arm lock or shotgun armbar starting from the side control position. André is controlling the opponent with the side control position. The opponent attempts to escape by bridging in and under hooking André's inside arm. André prevents the opponent from advancing by trapping the arm and leaning to the side. This allows him to create and angle where he can step over with his inside leg. He places his foot against the opponent’s shoulder to prevent them from moving back. This position now leaves the opponent’s underhook arm exposed. André controls the elbow and wrist and twists the arm to get the submission. Another scenario from this same position is to go for a shotgun armbar. André spins to the other side as if he is going for a regular armbar, but instead, the opponent’s arm is trapped in between André’s arm and torso.
