Professor Lucas Lepri teaches how to escape from the lapel control when the opponent has the de la riva. The opponent starts with the de la riva and is controlling Lucas’ lapel under the leg. Lucas starts to defend by gripping the opponent’s sleeve and locking his arm over the leg. He uses his other hand to push the de la riva side leg down. As he pushes the leg down, he lightly steps his leg to the side and slides it over the opponent’s calf to break the pants grip. His other knee is placed over the same leg near the middle. Lucas now grips the collar and pivots over his outside knee, sliding his body out to the side. He stops there for a second to release the grip on the sleeve and switch the grip to the bottom leg. Lucas moves back in by sliding his knee in first and then turns to the side to get the side control position.
