Professor Lucas Lepri demonstrates how to open the closed guard and how to pass the open guard. The situation starts with Lucas in the opponent's closed guard. Lucas grips both of the opponent’s lapels with one hand. He uses the other hand to grab the opposite sleeve. The same side he’s holding the sleeve, he lifts his leg and places it on the mat. Lucas transfers his weight to the leg he posted so he can then bring his other leg up. He is now standing up while the opponent still has their closed guard. Lucas still controls the sleeve and uses his free hand to grip and push on the opponent’s same side knee. Lucas back steps as he pushes the knee down and opens the opponent’s guard. The grip that was on the sleeve is now transferred to the same side knee. With both knees gripped, Lucas steps both feet back. Lucas picks one side and starts moving towards it. The knee of the side he picks is pushed down and away. Lucas comes to the side and places his shoulder on the chest. He then releases the grips and goes to the side control position.
