Professor Lucas Lepri shows how to counter a Sumi Gaeshi with a Cartwheel. Lucas starts by going for a single leg and grips his own lapel with the arm that is around the opponent’s leg and keeps his other hand on the opponent’s far side collar. Lucas starts to move side to side to try to bring the opponent down. The opponent then counters by gripping Lucas’ belt and sleeve. Lucas extends the arm that is gripping the opponent's collar so he won’t have too much leverage when he goes for the Sumi Gaeshi. As soon as the opponent goes for the Sumi Gaeshi, Lucas releases the grip on the collar. As he is falling he places his hand on the mat and performs the cartwheel over the opponent. The opponent tries to spin to face Lucas and Lucas then slides his posted hand and his knee in to prevent the opponent from attacking.
