Professor Lucas Lepri explains how to sweep an opponent from De La Riva guard and apply a knee cut to side control. Lucas starts in De La Riva guard with a far-side collar grip and same-side pants grip. If the opponent tries to break the lapel grip, Lucas pushes him back using his leg. The opponent will resist the push, and Lucas uses his forward momentum to push him to the side, causing the opponent to base on the floor with his far-side hand. Lucas then circles the De La Riva hook to the outside of the opponent’s leg and blocks his hips, not allowing the opponent’s trapped foot touch the ground. He then applies an underhook on the trapped foot and holds the same-side sleeve. Lucas then shifts his far-side foot down the opponent’s leg to block the back of the knee to prevent him from basing when the sweep is applied. Shifting his hips toward his opponent, Lucas uses his knee to push the opponent’s hips back and complete the sweep. In the first option, once the opponent loses his balance, Lucas pulls the foot away from the opponent’s hip and uses it to base as he comes up and traps his opponent’s far-side leg using his knee for a far-side knee cut over-under pass. Lowering his chest, Lucas releases the collar to club the head and grip the gi on the back. Lucas then back steps to complete the transition to side control and only then releases the sleeve to block the hips. In the second option, Lucas demonstrates how to complete the transition to side control when he is unable to pull the foot away from the opponent’s hip before the opponent falls. In this situation, Lucas sits up and lifts the opponent’s leg using his elbow, opening space to pull his own leg back. He then shows how to apply the same-side knee cut pass to side control.
