Professor Lucas Lepri explains how to escape from the reverse De La Riva lapel guard and then pass. When the opponent establishes the reverse De La Riva lapel guard, Lucas sets a grip on the opponent's collar and another grip on the pant leg as low as possible to avoid the armbar. He then posts with one hand and sits to the mat, stepping his foot onto the opponent's arm while maintaining his grip low on the pant leg. When the opponent attempts to break the pant leg grip, Lucas extends his legs and to escape the lapel guard. He opts to pass the open guard with a double under or toreada pass to prevent the opponent from reestablishing the lapel guard. In case the opponent reacts by attacking for the single leg, Lucas lifts the pant leg grip while coming up and driving his lead knee forward. He holds around the opponent's head, moves his hand under the leg, and passes with the knee cut, taking his arm out in order to avoid the inverted triangle when the opponen escapes his arm.
