Description

Professor Lucas Lepri explains how to pass De La Riva guard using a leg drag when the opponent resists his initial leg drag attempt. The situation begins with Lucas in the opponent's De La Riva guard with an ankle grip and a cross-collar grip. The first thing Lucas does is break the lapel grip by pushing his lead knee forward, posturing up, and using both hands to push the opponent's hand away. Once the cross-collar grip is broken, Lucas disengages the opponent's legs by gripping both pant legs with fingers pointed out, pushing down, then pushing forward. He applies pressure using his lead leg, but when he releases the pressure to drag his opponent's legs to the side he is not able to drag them far enough. The opponent responds by resisting the leg drag and driving his legs back to prevent the pass. Lucas emphasizes the importance of timing and momentum; as the opponent drives his legs back toward Lucas, Lucas pushes the legs in the same direction as the opponent is moving them, taking advantage of the momentum to clear the legs. Lucas is then able to grab far collar, lock his elbow to his knee, and release the collar and slide into side control when the opponent attempts to turn and face him.
