Professor Lucas Lepri demonstrates a sweep set-up beginning from De La Riva and transitioning to X-Guard, using his opponent’s reaction and momentum to complete the sweep. From De La Riva with a pants and sleeve grip, the opponent pushes Lucas’ legs down and Lucas responds by crossing his legs behind the opponent’s leg. He forces his opponent to post his hands on the floor by squeezing his knees, pulling them toward his chest, and extending his legs to bump his opponent over his head. As soon as the opponent posts his hands, Lucas releases the sleeve and grips the opposite sleeve near the wrist. Lucas then uncrosses his legs and establishes the X-Guard while lifting his opponent’s leg over and across his body, so that the leg and both the opponent’s arms are on the same side. In this situation, the opponent immediately turns in toward Lucas. Lucas responds by releasing the leg and gripping near the shoulder on the same sleeve that the other hand is already gripping. He pulls the arm down while bending his knees to complete the sweep.
