Professor Lucas Lepri explains how to transition to a kneebar submission when the opponent defends against the sweep attempt shown in the previous technique. Lucas establishes the shin-to-shin sit up guard as before, and begins to lift the opponent and fall to his side. In this situation, when Lucas cups the back of the ankle, the opponent defends against the sweep by opening his knee. Lucas releases the ankle and hooks the opponent’s knee while pulling his own knee in. Releasing the other leg, he uses the knee to push the opponent to the other side, trapping the opponent’s leg over his shoulder. Lucas creates space with his other leg, either by pushing the opponent’s thigh or armpit. Once he has created space, Lucas transitions to lock the leg in a figure four to complete the kneebar submission.
