Professor Lucas Lepri demonstrates a method for passing to side control by forcing an opponent playing open guard to invert. Lucas catches the opponent’s legs and pushes them over his head so he is in a position similar to an inverted guard. Lucas uses his legs to block his opponent’s leg and lower back, keeping him in position while he cups the opponent’s knee with one hand and grips the back of the opponent’s pants with the other hand. In this situation, Lucas attempts to apply a leg drag, but the opponent reacts and resists the motion. When the opponent reacts, Lucas stretches out his leg blocking the opponent’s back and falls to his side and elbow dragging the leg across his body. He then reaches under the opponent’s arm and grips the gi, maintaining his grip on the back of the pants. Lucas then comes up to his knee, using his elbow to post so that he can maintain the grip on the opponent’s pants. Lucas pivots his legs away from the opponent and reaches under the arm to grip the back of the collar. Using this collar grip, Lucas forces his opponent to turn until he is able to establish a seatbelt grip. From here, Lucas is able to take the back.
